Tampere Cappella was founded in 2015 by its artistic director Markus Yli-Jokipii, who is also the Senior Lecturer of choral conducting in TAMK. The choir has performed with Tampere Filharmonia and Pirkanmaa Baroque, commissioned and premiered music by Finnish and Nordic composers and even worked in a musical production of Disneys’ The Huntchback of Notre Dame. Tampere Cappella also works as a vocal ensemble at TAMK, participating in the education of choral conductors and ensemble singers. Tampere Cappella’s season 2024 highlights include the premieres of Hannu Pohjannoro’s chamber opera Birgitta and Mikko Heiniö’s Guitar concerto as well as performances in Finnish festivals.


Artistic director

Markus Yli-Jokipii is a Finnish choral conductor and the senior lecturer of choral conducting at Tampere University of Applied Sciences. He is the founder and conductor of a professional choral ensemble Tampere Cappella and the conductor of Chorus Cantorum Finlandiae.

During 2008-2015 Yli-Jokipii was the conductor of the baroque orchestra Musicians of the King’s Road. As a guest conductor he has visited Helsinki Chamber Choir, Emo Ensemble and Finnish Navy Wind Band. At TAMK Yli-Jokipii conducts choirs and orchestras with symphonic repertoire and opera and teaches Music History. 

Yli-Jokipii has graduated from the Sibelius Academy (Master of Music, Choral conducting) and from the University of Turku (Master of Arts, Musicology). He has been awarded with the Aboa prize in culture 2009 and the Choral Conductor the Year 2017.
